Job Description:
Night Shift Position - Hours are from 1800-0600
Under the general supervision of the shift Sergeant, performs
routine policy enforcement and security work in the protection of
people and in the safeguarding of University property. The
incumbent participates and supervises subordinate staff in the
securing of assigned property against possible loss or damage and
is charged with insuring the safety of all individuals on campus.
Work is reviewed through conferences and reports for compliance
with established policies, procedures and guidelines. Performs
other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Patrols/makes rounds of the assigned area by foot or vehicle;
watches for unauthorized persons or activities; reports unusual
instances to shift Sergeant; calls police for assistance if
necessary.
- Assists in traffic details, parking lot reservations, parking
enforcement, and assists with pedestrian crossings as
requested.
- Acts as a liaison for the Public Safety Department, provides
unlocks, assists contractors/vendors, and provides medical escorts
as requested.
- Investigates crime, completes incident reports, checks for
safety, fire, and security hazards, submits work orders for
repairs. Coordinates with DeLand Police Department as
needed.
- Responds to fire, burglary, and panic alarms. Coordinates with
the DeLand Fire Department to reset the systems.
- Conducts lighting and parking lot surveys and reports findings
to command staff.
- Cross-trained to cover dispatch as needed.
- Performs some minor building maintenance tasks, i.e., securing
broken windows, turning off water, and resetting 110 volt electric
circuit breakers.
- Considered essential personnel. Monitors campus during severe
weather events, power outages, or any other situation requiring
all-hands on duty.
Required Skills
- Knowledge of the structure and function of the
University.
- Knowledge of state, county and local laws, rules, and
ordinances.
- Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to follow a chain-of-command.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding investigations,
incidents, reports etc. and safeguard privacy of
individuals.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Ability to deal with the public tactfully and
courteously.
- Ability and alertness in observing unusual conditions and in
reporting them to proper authorities.
- Ability to maintain simple records.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
- Skill in the application of proper safety precautions.
- Ability to able to drive a university vehicle to include, but
not limited to, an automobile, SUV or golf cart.
- Must have the physical ability to be on your feet for extended
periods of time, walking up and down stairs, running, lifting
objects from the ground at least 50lbs.
Required Experience
- HS Diploma or GED.
- Must be familiar with the fundamental operation of Fire Alarms
and Fire Alarm Systems.
- Excellent communications skills, written and verbal.
- Florida Class D license required at hiring date or within the
first 30 days of employment, conditional.
- This position requires operations of a University Vehicle. A
valid driver's license and insurable driving record are
required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or equivalent.
- Basic Law Enforcement, Corrections Academy training and
completion
- Emergency Medical Technician certification or Emergency Medical
Responder (EMR)
- 3 years of work-related experience as a law enforcement,
corrections or military professional
- Private security experience may be considered which
demonstrates equivalent knowledge to the field of a campus safety
environment.
